One area of focus for the Oilers is upgrading their forward lines. Here are three intriguing targets that could bolster their offensive depth:
Matt Poitras, Boston Bruins
Poitras had a promising rookie season in 2023-24, showcasing his offensive skills and filling a void left by the departure of key center Patrice Bergeron. However, concerns about his foot speed and sheltered minutes have emerged. Despite these challenges, Poitras' ability to thrive in a sudden need situation for the Bruins is notable. His second pro season saw a split between the NHL and AHL, indicating a need for further development. The Oilers could benefit from his right-handed center presence and potential growth, especially with their depth chart needs.
Arthur Kaliyev, Free Agent
Kaliyev is a goal-scoring machine, averaging an impressive 39 goals per 82 games in the AHL and 54 goals in the OHL. His ability to consistently find the back of the net is exceptional, and his foot speed, while declining, still poses a threat. The Oilers should consider signing Kaliyev, even if he primarily contributes to their AHL affiliate, the Condors. His scoring prowess is a valuable asset, and he could be a difference-maker for the team.
Conor Geekie, Tampa Bay Lightning
Geekie is a versatile forward with an impressive skill set. Standing at 6'4" and weighing 212 pounds, he possesses the size and ability to dominate on the ice. However, his inconsistency at the NHL level is a concern. With 66 games played, he has only scored nine goals and 17 points. Nonetheless, his AHL performance is noteworthy, with 28 goals and 79 points in 81 games. The Lightning's recent struggles with graduating prospects could present an opportunity for the Oilers to acquire Geekie and potentially unlock his full potential.
The Glen Sather Method
In today's NHL, general managers have access to advanced analytics and scouting departments, making it more challenging to find overlooked talent. However, the Oilers have the advantage of cap space and roster flexibility. Bowman can emulate the successful strategy employed by Glen Sather, the former Oilers GM, who often acquired players at a discount. With some roster pieces ready to be traded and some financial flexibility, the Oilers can pursue young talents with potential. Each of the players mentioned has the potential to develop into impact players over the next two seasons, and adding a right-handed center like Poitras could be a game-changer for the Oilers' Stanley Cup aspirations.
In my opinion, the Oilers should aggressively pursue these targets. While they may not acquire all three, adding even one of these young, struggling talents with high upside is a smart move. It's a risk worth taking to improve their chances of hoisting the Stanley Cup.
